Introduction

Hello there. It’s John Dale from GlobileNet. Just to relay another different type of work that we do, and that relates to swimming pool lights.

The Customer’s Situation

Sharad called me. He’s used me for many years, happened to be selling his house. His lights weren’t working in the pool. He really needed to have them up and running. There was an urgent need to have them fixed. The benefit, of course, was that it probably increased the value of his home.

Why Pool Lights Are Tricky

So the problem is with pool lights is that they’re sometimes quite difficult to repair. And there’s a number of reasons why they might be. One, sometimes the lead that connects to the light itself does not allow you to lift the light above the waterline. In that case, you’ve really got to drain the pool in order to put a new light on.

Light Fittings and Compatibility Issues

The other thing is that there are quite a few different varieties of lights that fit into the pool, and you have to make sure you get the right one to fit that base.

Using Modern Universal Fittings

Now, there are multiple vendors online that sell universal fittings, which I often use, they’re very good. They’re much better than the old ones because they’re a sealed LED unit. The last 10 years, at least, they’ve got a great weatherproof connection feature, as long as we’ve got the cable that we’re connected to.

Hidden Problems With Old Installations

So the problem we have sometimes though is (once we’ve drained the pool, if we need to), the base where the old light sat has to have good integrity, of course. In Sharad’s case, they had lights from a particular Australian supplier (that are quite expensive, 33% more expensive than a universal light), and when we tried to fit the new lights, the base, when the pool was done, was not fitted flush to the pebblecrete finish. So when we put the lights up, it actually sat off the wall because there wasn’t quite the same depth as the original light, done to hide or mask the problem.

Owning the Mistake and Next Steps

In this case, we had to acknowledge to Sharad that I’d made a bit of a blunder that the pool, we wouldn’t know until we actually tried to fit the new lights, but they were not satisfactory. So, I didn’t charge him for that service, actually.

Finding the Right Solution

I took the lights away. I said I’d find the replacement lights, which we did. They weren’t more expensive, so for the same price plus the premium for these particular lights, he was happy to proceed again.

Final Installation Success

This was very much a successful installation, and in this case, by the way, I did have enough cable to be able to attach the lights above the waterline. So there wasn’t a matter of emptying the pool below the lights. They fitted because they were accommodating the same depth on the misaligned brackets.

Conclusion

So the job was done well. We were happy to have done it. Wasn’t a very profitable job, but a happy customer is much more important than profit. I am John Dale from GlobileNet. Give us a call. Thanks.
