Almost all ceiling fan installations require some work on your home’s electrical system. In NSW, it’s illegal to do DIY electrical work. Legalities aside, it’s a difficult and dangerous process to install a ceiling fan yourself:

  • Wiring the Fan & Switches – You’ll need to properly wire your ceiling fan to the existing junction box, or install a new one if necessary. You may also need to install a new switch, or may want to change the position of the switch in the room which will require some rewiring. Without expertise you risk using the wrong gauge or not properly connecting your wires, leading to a risk of short circuits and electrical fires.
  • Mounting Brackets or Braces – If your fan did not come with mounting equipment, you’ll need to select brackets or braces appropriate for the weight and speed of the fan. These will be mounted to the wall using suitable screws. Using inappropriate equipment may not lead to obvious problems immediately, but means your fan is not securely fastened and is at risk of falling, especially with continued use. A falling ceiling fan can cause serious injury as well as damage to your ceiling and property underneath.
  • Balancing – After installation you’ll need to ensure your fan’s blades are correctly balanced through visual inspections and operational tests. It’s difficult to do this step accurately without experience and the right equipment, and fans installed DIY are often left slightly off balance.     We take care to select appropriate and durable hardware including the mounting bracket and support brace, as well as screws and fasteners. Finally, we always secure the canopy, aligning it with the mounting bracket, and carefully balance the blades.

    After installation, we perform a number of tests:
    • Visual inspection - looking for any misalignment
    • Manual rotation test - with the fan off, we rotate the blades and check for balance
