New Customer Referral
Hi, this is John Dale from GlobileNet. Today, I’d like to talk about a job that we’ve done for a customer called Jason. Jason was not a pre-existing customer, but he got referred actually by a neighbor that we did some work for.
Range Hood Extraction Problem
He had the problem that his range hood wasn’t extracting enough air, and grease was falling down on top of the cooktop. So he called me and I went out to give him a free consultation and have a good look at the installation.
Identifying the Cause
What I found was that the range hood extraction hose, which went out the wall, was very tight and it collapsed on itself. And when that does happen, the problem is you don’t get airflow, but also it collects the grease because with a venting type system like that, with range hoods, they come in a recirculation mode, or you can put a duct on them to extract the outside, but it’s one or the other.
Fire Hazard and Grease Build-Up
So when you don’t have the recirculating charcoal filters installed, and then you extract to the outside and you get a blockage, then the grease collects up into the well of the range hood. And over time, it could be a fire hazard, but also it can start leaking and bleaching down into the first level of filters, the ones that you see, and ultimately dribble down onto the cooktop and everything’s a bit smelly and horrible.
Considering Replacement Options
So the fix here was that the range hood had a particular size because it was in a cabinet. The customer wasn’t quite sure what was required in terms of making sure that what he ordered was actually going to fit. So what I did for him is I said “Look, I’ll take the model details of the one that you’ve got. It’s not repairable because it’s too old. And I will look up dimensions for range hoods. And if you would like me to, I can supply the range hood. But if you want to supply the range hood yourself, that’s fine.”
Warranty Considerations
I said to Jason that he needed to understand that if he bought the range hood and there was a warranty issue, then he would be paying me or an electrician to come out and service it during its warranty cycle. If I supplied it, then he would have the warranty period, and often it’s about three years for a range hood, where I would come and service it and change it out at no dollars, no cost, because the labor is included in my warranty. Obviously, there’s a small premium to pay for that.
Finding the Right Model
However, he was happy with that, and I went and did a little bit of research and did find a model that was good, and it was actually a Kleenmaid, which is an Australian brand that happened to fit in exactly that same space, had pretty much exactly the same dimensions.
Customer Chooses the Range Hood
I gave him the link and he actually ended up buying it, which is fine. And his wife, in particular, because his wife was a cook, was very keen to have it changed. So they actually contracted me after I’d given them a quote to do it within a couple of days.
Removing the Old Ducting
Now, when we did the installation, as is the case many times with these things, we’ve removed the old duct from the outside wall, and we put a new piece of duct in so it didn’t have that greasy old slime all over it, and it was fitting properly.
Installing and Adjusting the Range Hood
And then we fitted the new range hood. When you fit the range hood, there’s always a slight difference. And in this case, the cupboards didn’t close, the doors didn’t close, etc. So we actually ended up adjusting the doors and the frames a little so that the doors would close properly. And more importantly, to Jason’s satisfaction.
Excellent Airflow Performance
So once that was all done, we ran the system and the airflow was tremendous. That particular product had a very high airflow as well, much higher than the one that they previously had.
Happy Customer, Happy Cook
So the customer was very, very happy with the result. And more importantly, his wife was very happy.
Importance of Consultation
So in this whole process, when we do it, there’s several steps we go through. As I’ve explained, we need to make sure mostly that the range had fits. And there’s been occasions before where the clients supplied the range hood, given us a call, and then we’ve gone to fit it, and we can fit it, but then the cupboards are not quite right, and there’s no way of making some minor adjustments to fit it.
