Long-Term Customer with Failing Kitchen Downlights
Hi, this is John Dale from GlobileNet. Another story in relation to our electrical contracting experience. We had a customer, a long-term customer, actually, that called in relation to some downlights that were in the kitchen and had been failing.
Old Halogen Lights vs LED Upgrade
We’d fix one or two of them a couple of years ago, but they were the old halogen-style lights, and they didn’t want to replace them with new LED lights at the time.
The Value of GlobileNet’s Warranty Service
So I suggested to her that we actually make a change of the lights rather than have any warranty problems, because when we supply the lights, and any equipment, for that matter, GlobileNet provides a warranty period that matches the lifetime stated warranty of the light. Now, that means, for example, if an LED light has a warranty of five years, then GlobileNet provides a warranty for five years. And what that means is that we actually provide a free labor service should that light need to be changed during that period.
Why Workmanship Warranties Don’t Mean Much
So a lot of people give lifetime warranties on workmanship. Now, once you’ve done some work, it either works or it doesn’t. So usually workmanship doesn’t mean very much at all. It’s a bit of a useless offer, but it sounds impressive. Lifetime workmanship, wonderful. But we provide a warranty service life of the equipment we supply.
Another Issue: Ceiling Fan Switching On by Itself
She asked us to go ahead, but she also mentioned that she had another problem with a ceiling fan. The ceiling fan would randomly switch on during the day or during the night, and they’d go into the room and it was on. We said “yeah, I’ll have a look at that, too.”
Installing New Downlights with Plug Bases
We went there and we replaced the downlights. There were only five downlights in total. That was relatively easy because all we had to do was disconnect the old wires, re-terminate them onto ceiling sockets or surface sockets, or plug bases, as they’re called, so that we could plug in the new LED lights, which obviously gives the customer the benefit of being able to change it themselves in the future if they wanted to.
Troubleshooting the Ceiling Fan Problem
Then we looked at the fan problem upstairs in the bedroom, and that was a little less obvious. The controller was working properly. And in our experience, or in my experience in particular, I’ve known neighbors to have the same fan on the same settings so that a neighbor could occasionally turn their fan on and it would actually be close enough for the neighbor’s fan to come on as well.
Adjusting the Controller Identifier
And usually it’s a matter of I was changing the identifier, there’s little switches on some of these that makes it unique. I just changed the switches to a new signature and I’d left it with her to let me know if it had helped.
Final Fix with a Replacement Controller
As it happened, it didn’t on this occasion, and so Shirlene did have a spare controller. So I said “leave it out on the deck”, then I’d go in and change that controller to the identifier of the ceiling fan as we changed it. I popped in passing by and did that. And later on, she checked it and everything was working fine. And we haven’t heard from her since.
A Happy Customer and Positive Review
So there we have another happy customer. John Dale signing out. And Shirlene gave us a wonderful review as well. Thank you.
