Honest Advice in Customer Consultations
Hi, this is John Dale from GlobileNet, your friendly local electrician. I’ve been talking in a series of contracting arrangements with clients, but this one is a little different, and I just wanted to express that this is not so unusual for us, that we do sometimes go to a client and advise them not to do works or works that are not necessary. And one of those cases was a guy called Shakti as a reference from one of his friends who was a customer.
The Switchboard Upgrade Concern
Now, he had this issue where he was told he needs to upgrade the switchboard. I asked him to send me a few pictures of the switchboard. From those pictures, I actually gave him a quote to upgrade the switchboard, probably about $1,200. But when I reviewed the switchboard, I could see that the reason that he wanted it changed was that there was no safety circuit breakers, or he didn’t understand whether he had them or not, or he was told perhaps.
Clarifying Safety for the Family
But I informed him that like all the power circuits in the house, although it was old switchboard, there was no immediate urgency from a safety perspective for his children because that’s what he was worried about. They just really moved into this new place.
Testing the Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker
I advised him to test, what we call, the Earth leakage circuit breaker. It usually has a push button, and the one safety circuit breaker controls all of the power in the house. On testing and pressing the button, that safety circuit should trip and all the power should go off. In this case, when he did do that test, he found “Oh, yes! I’ve just moved in. I really don’t have thousands of dollars to spend.” So he was very, very grateful to know that his children were safe, that there was no immediate threat to the children.
A Customer’s Grateful Review
Although I didn’t charge him for any services, he was very happy to write a review which really was as follows: “John provided exceptional service. I was considering upgrading my old fuses to RCBOs (safety circuit breakers) for safety, especially since I have young children. When I mentioned this to John, he took the time to inspect my meter box and explained that I had already had safety circuit breakers for all of the power points, so the upgrade wasn’t necessary immediately. His honest advice saved me a lot of money. He is incredibly knowledgeable, approachable, and helpful, a true gem. I highly recommend his services.”
